2023/Mar/24 Graduation

These are group photos after submission of master's thesis and at the graduation day. M2s (Kota Kurabayashi, Akira Nakata and Satoshi Nomura) worked well as a team and smartly managed the lab events. Due to the Covid relaxation, they were able to enjoy laboratory activities a little in the last several months, but their energy must not have been fully dissipated. So I hope they will enjou as much as they can while they are young. Until we meet again, I wish you all the best!

2022/Dec/23 Lab cleaning and Year-end party

We did year-end lab room cleaning. Each lab room was cleaned and wiped down by the person in charge, followed by the main task of waxing. Waxing has been the job of M1 students for some time now. After finished cleaning, we supposed to have a small party, just drinking beer in each room, but we felt it was not enough. We went out for buying foods and cooked Oden in a large pot, grilled Gyoza. The party changed into a year-end party. This was the first face-to-face drinking party since February 2020, so it had been about three years. It was really fun to hear each private parts which maybe they would not talk about in online drinking party. Then, we went to karaoke for the second party, I think this was the first time we went to karaoke in Kato's lab! Our three M1 students always go to karaoke by themselves, and it was a shock news to the older people who had never been to karaoke by themselves.

2022/Dec/7 The 6th Lab sports event

After 3 years since the 5th Lab sports event in the fall 2019, we are finally able to restart and revive the Lab sports event! Thanks to M2 students, they organized this event. We were grouped in Team Kato and Team Wada and played Badminton, Volleyball and Kick & Baseball. The singles match between D2/Ohashi and M2/Kurabayashi was a heated competition. Team Kato was only able to win the doubles match between Prof.Kato and M1/Maekawa pair vs M2/Nomura and M1/Mannabe pair, while Team Wada won the remaining pairs and single matches. In volleyball, Team Kato won two sets while enduring to receive ball. In kick & Baseball, it was hard for players to grasp the soft 100-yen shop ball(flew like a magic ball and was difficult to catch). Team Kato won the overall championship, and after receiving the prize of sweets, all lab members enjoyed the sweets. After the event, we were still able to use the gym for about an hour, so we enjoyed playing futsal, basketball, and table tennis. We had a really great time!

2022/Sep/26 Graduation and farewell

Three Chinese students, D3/SONG Ruirui, M2/TANG Bowen and M2/ZHU Pengfei have completed their studies and graduated from Kato-lab. Song will continue her research as a Specially Appointed Assistant Professor at the E-IMR in IMR from October. Tang will stay in our Lab as he will continue to the doctoral course. Zhu will leave Sendai since he starts working in Tokyo. Although he said he would come back to Sendai soon to visit his favorite ramen shop and Zunda Mochi (rice cake) in Sendai, this would be the goodbye time. This time we took a group photo around the statue of Dr. Lu Xun. There are other good photo spots in Katahira campus, so we would like to continue to take at variety spots in the future. For the photo in the laboratory, Zhu's requested to take with the high-frequency melting furnace. He spent many days and nights working hard together. The farewell party will be held online later, but I have a feeling that the face-to-face drinking party will return next time.

2022/May/19 Welcome party

It was little late after this new fisical year starts, but we held a welcome party for M1/Yuta Konno, M1/Yuta Maekawa, M1/Yuki Mibabe, D1/Louis LESAGE, and JSPS foreign researcher Dr. Pierre-Antoine GESLIN. We introduced ourselves by talking about our hobbies, hometowns, and how we are now in Kato Lab, etc. It turned out that many of members are good in badminton. It was interesting to hear that Dr. GESLIN also introduced a cat that he had brought from France whose name was Tanuki, which confused the immigration officers. The topic [How to get known with the different gender and how to get married] was discussed by a student and the married staffs began to talk about the process to marriage. After closing the main party, we continued to the 2nd party. Since it was held on a weekday and it would affect tomorrow, we ended the party rather early. I hope we can have a face-to-face meeting next time...
